An Interview with Claire Menary | Wanderlust

Wanderlust
a wish to travel far away and to many different places
“a woman consumed by wanderlust”

This week we’re continuing our Wanderlust series by chatting to Claire Menary photographer, travel blogger and vacation enabler (if you haven’t booked your summer trip yet, take one look at her Instagram and you will!) We get her top travel tips below…

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Absolutely – I’m Claire, a lifestyle photographer and blogger from London with a penchant for putting my passport through its paces!

When did you first get travelling-bug? What made you fall in love with it?

I think I’ve always had it from a young age – we used to go on holiday growing up – but then, when I moved to London and became a “grown-up” (read: had to pay rent/spent every money I earned on living in the city) I actually didn’t get to travel all that much. It was since becoming my own boss that I’ve really upped the air miles! I’m super lucky to travel with work occasionally and I also get invited to explore and experience new parts of the world through the blog, which is incredible if you think about it. What I love about travelling is simply that I get to see a new part of the world each time – see the cultures, the landscapes, the ways of life.

Long-haul flights can be hell. Do you have any advice for making them as bearable as possible?

I have to confess: I love long-haul flights! The perfect opportunity to switch off completely and do whatever you want – whether that’s reading, listening to music or sleep! As soon as I get on the plane, I give myself a mini facial and take off all my make-up and slather my face in all lotions and potions to keep my skin hydrated during the flight (I’ll even go as far as putting eye gel masks on but haven’t quite had the courage yet to brave a sheet mask!). After that, I pick what films I want to watch (there’s always something I haven’t seen that I’ve been meaning to) and before I know it, it’s usually landing time!

Do you ‘pack light’ for your trips? What are your hair and beauty essentials?

Ha! My recent trip to California will tell you that I do NOT pack light! That said, usually I’m a good packer and quite restrained. Often, I do short haul trips so sometimes just take a hand luggage sized suitcase with me which makes product packing slightly tricky. If I’m going away for a few days and don’t mind the minimal routine, I usually take a lot of sample sachets of products I’ve been meaning to try and also just bring with me some travel sized products – they are a godsend every time I get given them.

Tips for taking amazing vacation photos?

If you’re in a crowded place, sometimes patience will get you that shot you’re looking for. So if you don’t mind waiting a little bit, hang around and there will be a moment when a break between the crowds happens. Also, I sometimes just change my perspective a little and try to see a place in a way in which I’ve never seen it shot before – challenge yourself with your photography and see what you can create.

How do you find the best place to eat & drink whilst you’re away?

I pretty much work on recommendations by others through reading their blogs and scouring their instagram pages – it’s usually how I source all my restaurants and bars!

What’s been the most surreal place you’ve ever visited? What made is so magical?

Hands down, India. It was the most beautiful country and I loved exploring it. Rajhastan is possibly one of my favourite places I’ve ever been – bursting with colour, life and chaos. I couldn’t have asked for anything more.

Sun, chlorine and hot weather can wreak havoc on your hair- how do you keep yours looking so great?

Hair is something I’ve spent so much money on my whole life so there is no way I scrimp on the products I put on it, I invest in a good hair conditioning mask and quality shampoos and conditioner.

Also, I cannot recommend regular trims enough – I used to think it was just an old wives’ tale but really, if you see your hairdresser every 7 or so weeks for a small trim, your hair will thank you in the long run!
