How does hair grow?

There are many myths around how hair grows best for the longest hair possible. Many swear by keeping regular appointments for a hair trim while others steer clear of scissors and simply leave hair unattended for months on end hoping that left alone will grow at its best. Whatever our own quirks on how to grow our hair, one thing that isn’t disputed is how does hair grow.

You can expect your hair to grow on average half an inch per month but there are things you can do to make hair grow faster.

Understanding the way in which our hair grows puts you in a better position for achieving longer and stronger hair. Hair grows in three stages. From actively growing from the root to the inevitable hair shedding; these are known as the Anagen phase, Catagen and finally Telogen phase.

The Anagen phase is the period of growth. Your hair is actively growing from the roots and this happens for an average of 3-5 years before hair follicles becomes dormant. In this timeframe your hair can grow anywhere between 18-30 inches. Asian hair can actively grow for longer and can experience up to 7 years of active growth and reach up to one metre in length for hair growth.

During the Catagen phase of your hair’s growth cycle, this period is short, lasting only 2 weeks on average and this is the transitional phase where hair sits dormant and prepares itself to shed and hair follicles shrink and detach.

Finally, after the average five year timeframe, your hair enters its third and final stage called the Talogen phase. Individual hairs will fall out but this is nothing to be alarmed out and this natural process should go completely unnoticed; as each follicle is independent and goes through the growth cycle at different times so you don’t lose patches of hair all at once. Instead, you only shed a certain number of hairs each day – anything up to 100 hairs is normal – so there is never any noticeable shedding or loss of hair density.

After shedding, hair follicles are inactive for 3 months before they begin the growth process again and new hairs begin to grow.

For optimum hair growth, hair needs to stay in the Anagen phase for a long as possible and this can be supported by a healthy diet and lifestyle, using products that care for your hair such as Grow Gorgeous and avoiding unnecessary damage that may attribute to your hair growth cycle being disrupted.
